Plaid unemployment figures bode well for Welsh future

Responding to UK unemployment figures announced today, Plaid MPs have noted that the statistics for Wales are encouraging, and are testament to the effectiveness of devolved economic powers of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Figures show that over the past three months, Wales has faired well against the rest of the UK , and has shown ‘no change’ despite the UK jobless total being at a record high.

Plaid’s Westminster leader Elfyn Llwyd MP said:

“These figures are not as bad as feared which is some reassurance and Wales is proving itself to be fairly resilient.

“Credit should go to Plaid's leader and Economic Development Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones for pulling out all the stops, and for the Welsh Assembly Government’s proactive stance in arranging prompt, effective economic summits.

“It is testament to the positive and effective way in which devolved powers of the Welsh Assembly Government can act.

“While the figures are bound to fluctuate over time, I do hope that this resilience will continue and I know that the tourism sector Wales is doing well and is set to do even better over coming months - something which I hope will assist the country in weathering the financial storm.”
