The Government is collapsing before our eyes

David Cameron told Gordon Brown to accept that his ability to command his Cabinet has “simply disappeared” at Prime Minister’s Questions.

David pointed to the resignations of the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, the Cabinet Office Minister, Tom Watson, and the Communities Secretary, Hazel Blears, and stressed that Gordon Brown was facing “a direct challenge to his authority”.

David warned that Britain now has “a dysfunctional Cabinet and a dysfunctional government” and asked whether there will be any further resignations before Gordon Brown’s reshuffles his Cabinet.

He also posed a direct question about the future of Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer:

“The Prime Minister refuses to talk about him in anything other than the past tense. Will he still be there in a week’s time?”

David stressed, “The Government is collapsing before our eyes” – and he called on Gordon Brown to dissolve Parliament and hold a General Election straight away.
