Cameron stresses need to sort out system of MPs' expenses to discuss food sustainability

David Cameron has stressed the need to sort out the system of MPs’ expenses and start “rebuilding trust between Parliament and the people it’s meant to represent”.

In an interview on BBC News, David said, "We have to acknowledge just how bad this is. The public are really angry and we have to start by saying, look, this system that we had, that we used, that we operated, that we took part in - it was wrong and we're sorry about it."

He called for an independent audit and all claims to be published online as soon as they’re made, explaining, “If we had done that, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now.”

He said that Conservative MPs should explain “why they claimed what they did” and “admit to any mistakes”.

And he stressed the current situation was “bad for Parliament and it’s bad for our democracy – we’ve got to sort it out. And part of sorting it out is acknowledging just how bad it is now.”
