David Cameron discussed MPs’ expenses at a press conference ahead of the House of Commons vote on the issue.
He stressed the importance of Parliament “(getting) its house in order” and highlighted Conservative proposals to close the final salary scheme for all new MPs, scrap the Communications Allowance and move towards the direct employment of staff to help prevent abuse in terms of employing family members.
He called for the Second Home allowance to be scrapped and replaced with a Transparent Parliamentary Allowance, and he reiterated his opposition to Gordon Brown’s proposal of ‘per diem’ amounts.
On the question of second jobs, David said there were “serious weaknesses with the drafting” of the Government’s motion, but said he would not oppose it.
He added, “It is a pity that the Prime Minister wants to play politics rather than sort this out – but as that is his approach to the larger question of the massive budget deficit we shouldn’t be surprised.”
