Halifax building society reported that house prices fell by 2.5% in March. Gordon Brown was very keen to dismiss the fall as any reason to panic and said that things were containable and this is the point at which I began to get angry. How on earth is our magical, mystical unelected leader going to contain house prices. Surely house prices are subject to the oldest principle of economics - supply & demand just like everything else one can sell. No one can get a mortgage so nobody wants property.
The over inflated house prices that have been allowed to shoot artificially high by the government over the last ten years have got nowhere to go but down. Magical Gordon says that we have to remember that house prices have risen 180% in 10 years so 2.5% drops are not a problem. Well...I've been playing with my calculator a bit again. If the average house price in the UK is £222k then this means the average house has dropped £5.5k in one month.
Now, call me old fashioned but I am not sure that I would be happy with losing £5.5k in any other circumstances, so why should I be expected to accept it now. I also find it quite insulting that I should be expected to. I'll tell you what Gordon, if £5,5k doesn't matter to you, then I'll refrain from paying that ammount in my tax this year... how about that? What's that? NO! sorry? You'll put me in prison? oh...OK then, just an idea!
This business all comes down to the same thing again and again. How long will it take someone to admit that the economy is in serious trouble and that something needs to be done before the proverbial poop really hits the fan as far the public is concerned. I think the present government thinks or knows that it'll be long gone before the full effects of its negligence and arrogance comes to light. Look to the skies over Westminster and see the glow of burning papers and bridges as the administration rings the last drops of good will and patience from the people of the UK.
