So according to the House of Lords committee, the record and unprecedented influx of migrants to the UK over the last few years has had little or no effect on peoples economic well being.
Gordon Brown disagrees and has dismissed the report. My first thoughts on this were sheer blind anger. Yet again, here is our labour PM telling us that a report by another government committee, the House of Lords no less is wrong. This being the case, it seems that Mr Brown thinks we are all a bunch of mugs. He's probably right. We (as a country) voted for his predecessor three times in a row and he's now the boss without an election. We are quite happy to sit around and allow this to happen. Regardless, he thinks we are mugs because he expects us to agree with him over an appointed committee of Lords just because he says so and thinks his policies on immigration are right. This is another case of New Labour Paternalism where because they still have a huge majority, they feel that they can just bulldoze the British public and any opposition to any of their policies or beliefs however daft.
I am also slightly vexed by the insistence by the PM that "Most people in the City of London know they have benefited very substantially" presumably from all this immigration. It occurs to me that old Gordon's world starts and ends at the City of London, and by that I am quite sure that he will be referring to the "City" as opposed to the "City of London". Yes the "City" has benefited. There are the increased revenues that have had to be paid by struggling local authorities to private companies under Gordon's self promoted PFI and PPP schemes to deal with the additional and ballooning pressures on schools, hospitals etc. There is the issue of house prices sky rocketing during Labour's terms in office. House prices that have been fuelled by an increase in the buy to let market cashing in on the increase in demand from the migrating hoards. The gap between rich and poor has probably not been as severe since medieval times so of course the "City" has a lot to thank Gordon for and Gordon will probably do very well from the "City" when he eventually leaves office.
I did start to cool down a bit though because I started to think to myself that if immigration has had little or no effect on my economic well being then why on earth do I care about it. After all if its not doing anything then its just like an appendix right? Maybe, but the problem is and anyone who has had their appendix removed will tell you that when the appendix flares up it's bloody painful and it'll kill you if you don't remove it quickly enough. I think it has to be said that it certainly seems to have been flaring over the last decade. We should perhaps start thinking about listening to the specialists before it kills our society and way of life forever. We're already loosing our icons because they may offend other cultures and that is whole-heartedly wrong wrong wrong.
